TRABOCCHI COAST

A unique spectacle

Discover the Trabocchi Coast by booking one of the tours among the many itineraries in Abruzzo.

The Trabocchi are striking wooden constructions built in the middle of the sea a few hundred meters from the coast and joined to the mainland by more or less stable footbridges.

The southernmost part of Abruzzo, is characterized by the presence of these constructions and for this reason it takes the name Costa dei Trabocchi.

More precisely, the municipalities that are part of this area are those of Francavilla al Mare, Ortona, San Vito Chetino, Rocca San Giovanni, Fossacesia, Torino di Sangro, Casalbordino, Vasto, and San Salvo.

Promenades along the Lungomare

History has it that these buildings, almost poised over the sea, were built in the mid-1700s by families of Jewish origin driven out of Germany and France.

These people quickly proved to be skilled blacksmiths and carpenters and built the “trabocchi,” or fishing machines on stilts, used to catch the fish with which the Abruzzo coast abounded.

Today, these constructions have been fortified and renovated to allow their preservation. Those who arrive here cannot miss a walk along the waterfront to discover them.
