Explore the Costa dei Trabocchi by reserving one of the many tours that are available in Abruzzo.
The Trabocchi are evocative wooden buildings built in the middle of the sea a few hundred meters off the coast and are connected to the mainland via fairly stable walkways.
The southernmost part of Abruzzo is characterized by the presence of such buildings and for this reason it is called Costa dei Trabocchi.
More specifically, the municipalities that are part of this area are those of Francavilla al Mare, Ortona, San Vito Chetino, Rocca San Giovanni, Fossacesia, Torino di Sangro, Casalbordino, Vasto, San Salvo.
Walks along the seafront
History has it that these buildings, almost hovering over the sea, were built in the middle of the 17th century by families of Jewish origin driven away from Germany and France.
These people turned out to be skilled blacksmiths and carpenters and they built the trabocchi, or fishing machines on stilts, used to catch the fish that was abundant on the Abruzzo coast.
Today, these buildings have been reinforced and renovated to ensure their preservation. Those who come to visit us should not miss a walk along the seafront to discover these treasures.
